Excel Complete

Need to know more about Excel but don't know where to start? This first stage course covers Introductory level topics including worksheets and workbooks, calculations, formatting, printing, charts, functions, formulas, cell references, datalists, introduction to macros and program options. This Stage course will cover the more advanced features of Excel- goal seek, what-if analysis, data tables and filters, conditional formula, pivot tables and advanced use of charts. From macros make use of Visual Basic within Excel to build automated and customised solutions.
  • Who is it for?

    Those who need to use Excel spreadsheet skills. Although the student need have no previous experience of Excel, it is essential that the student has previous experience in Windows and File Management. Suitable for 'beginners' to Excel.

    Experience of working with Windows and File Management is essential.

  • What does it cover?

    Excel is the spreadsheet program that is widely used commercially. This course provides the student with a knowledge of the main features of Excel and is ideal for students who wish to pursue a career in office computing.

    Workbooks/Worksheets; Open/Save Files; Enter Numeric Data & Text; Intro to Formatting; Select/Copy/Name Cells and Ranges; Select/Copy/Move cells; Relative and Absolute Cells; Insert/Delete Column & Row; Intro to Simple Formula; Fill handle; Cell Height & Width; Intro to Printing; Intro to Charts;; Advanced Formatting; Auto format; Protecting Worksheets; Advanced Printing; Page Setup (incl. Headers & Footers, orientation, scaling); Financial /Statistical /Maths Functions and Formulas; Data Lists/Databases; Data Forms.
    It also covers the more advanced and specialised aspects of Excel as well as Visual Basic for Applications
    Goal Seek and 'What if' Analysis; Data Tables; Pivot Tables; Extended Graphics; Data Validation; Functions; SubTotals; Formula Auditing; Conditional Formatting; Visual Basic Macros; Macros and Data Lists; Navigation Keys; Controls (e.g. Command Button); With Statements; Decision Marking Procedures Create Macros - introduction (If, Then etc); Loops; Message Boxes; User Defined Functions; Options
    By the end of the course you should be able to:
    ' Create a spreadsheet, input and edit data, save and open files
    ' Use formulas and functions from simple to advanced level
    ' Format a work sheet from basic formatting to advanced level
    ' Create appropriate charts and graphs to represent different types of data
    ' Use a spreadsheet as a database to use and sort and filter data
    ' Use goal seek and what if analysis
    ' Use and create macros and use VBA code to edit and construct macros

  • What will it be like?

    Demonstration using Smartboard through computer-linked projectors, exposition and discussion. One-to-one and Group work. Through tutor-guidance and hands-on experience, the completion of the course objectives.
    Ongoing monitoring of students' work including questions, observation and tasks. Start and End of class student self-assessment/achievement check box sheet.
    Teaching methods: Visual demonstration and verbal explanation. Written handouts with visual diagrams. One-to-one teaching. Group discussions
    Learning methods: Hands-on practical activities, Reading handouts and following instructions.
    One-to-one and group discussion.
    How students are assessed: Questions and answers during group discussions and one-to-one teaching.
    Record of students' progress and achievement on an assessment sheet as they achieve the course objectives. Practical work produced is evidence of learning.

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

    Materials are supplied free of charge by the Centre. As much practice as possible to reinforce learning. This may be at home or elsewhere or from homework given by the tutor.

MS Office Essentials For Work - Stage Two

If you feel you can already effectively use MS Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) but need to hone your skills for employment this is the course for you. It will not cover the basic features of these programs but will include the more complex everyday tasks required in the working environment. Students will need to be sure of their level of computer knowledge before enrolling on this course. Please ask for advice if you are unsure.

Key Skills For Work

This course looks at the key skills to work as an administrator. You will understand what the role of an administrator is and learn to develop those skills. This will include file management, writing business correspondence including business letters, reports, creating templates and leaflets. The course will include answering emails and the telephone professionally and how you work effectively as part of a team. The course will also look at the Data Protection Act and the key knowledge you need to have as an administrator. Students will learn how to create an effective Curriculum Vitae.
