Gentle Yoga And Meditation

A gentle class to help calm the mind, improve posture, balance, strength and flexibility. The course includes gentle asanas (postures), breath awareness, concentration/meditation techniques and guided relaxation.
  • Who is it for?

    This is a gentle yoga class accessible to all, to improve posture, core strength, balance, flexibility, and calm the mind. It will benefit students wishing to be introduced to the practice of yoga and/or those wishing to develop a slower and more mindful practice.
    Each class will include gentle yoga asana (postures), pranayama (breath manipulation practices), a long guided relaxation period, and concentration/meditation techniques.
    Yoga is generally safe, but students who have any health concerns should check with a medical advisor that yoga is suitable before enrolling.

  • What does it cover?

    The class will include: - An initial relaxation period - Pranayama (breath awareness practices) - Sun Salutations - A sequence of gentle Asanas (postures) - A final guided relaxation - An introduction to concentration & meditation practice
    Philosophy and principles of yogic practice will be woven into the class.
    By the end of the course, students will have: increased body awareness; increased strength, flexibility, core stability and balance; a better understanding of their own physical capacities and limitations, the ability to recognise minor signs of stress and tension and to use yoga practices to address these symptons; the ability to focus/concentrate the mind for a short period of time (if practiced daily) and an introduction level understanding of philosophical principles of yogic prcatise.

    These learning outcomes are reliant upon regular practice, effort and a willingness to meet these objectives. Also, self exploration in trying to apply yogic practices in daily life.

  • What will it be like?

    The class will include gently mobilising joints and stretching muscles with yoga postures (asanas). Some breath awareness (pranayama) and guided relaxation and meditation during the course will also help to aid relaxation and calm the mind.
    By the end of the course, you should be able to
    Perform some gentle yoga postures to aid flexibility and mobility
    Combine breathing with movement to aid focus and concentration
    Practice relaxation and meditation with guidance

  • What else do I need to buy or do?


    Wear loose comfortable clothing that does not restrict movements (sports top, loose sports trousers, T-shirts) and that do not restrict your breath: no jeans or belts.
    For health and safety reasons socks will need to be removed during standing postures. Practice is done barefoot (or with anti-slip socks if you do not wish to be barefoot.) You will need a yoga mat.

    You should attend the class on an empty stomach or have waited at least 2 hours after a light snack before coming to class. It is preferable not to drink water during class, however have water with you to drink after class.

    Try to practice yoga as often as possible but at least once a week. Using your experiences and knowledge gained from the course and handouts, try to do a bit at home as often as you can.

  • What could it lead to?

    Tutor to advise at the end of the course. Students who wish to continue to the next term must enrol in advance.
