Introduction to Ballroom Dancing

An introduction to ballroom and Latin dance for those who cannot attend a weekly course or who would just like to try the basics. Covering the basic step and a few simple variations in both the Waltz and Cha Cha Cha, this one day course will give you just enough to get you started with social dancing.
  • Who is it for?

This course is aimed at beginners, no experience necessary. It may also be useful for learners returning to ballroom dancing after a break, to recap the basics.

  • What does it cover?

Students will learn a selection of Latin and ballroom basic steps, turns and variations in short sequences. Dances will be performed to strict tempo ballroom music which will be discussed in relation to the style of the dance.

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

    1. Recognise and demonstrate the basic step of up to four ballroom and Latin dances.

    2. Perform these along with a few simple variations with a partner to music.

  • What will it be like?

Steps will be demonstrated by the tutor for learners to follow as a group before working with partners (optional) to perform to music. The tutor will advise you on styling and timing. The emphasis will be on fun. You are welcome to attend solo or with a partner although we can never guarantee an equal number of leaders and followers. Dancers are encouraged to rotate dance partners in order to enhance their leader and follower skills.

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

Comfortable clothing and footwear (ballroom, jazz or other soft dance shoes are ideal, or alternatively trainers / plimsolls) are recommended to allow for free movement.

  • What could it lead to?

You may wish to join a weekly class next term or dance socially. Your tutor will advise you of upcoming options.
