Level 2 Improvers Creative Writing - Online

For those who have done at least one year of work in a writing group at Level 1 and who are working on their own projects. Looking for more direction and commitment in your writing? These courses address questions of self-discipline and risk-taking and are designed to develop and hone your skills.
  • Who is it for?

This course is for students who have completed at least a year at Beginners level, and who are looking for more direction and commitment in their writing.
The course runs in two six-week blocks each term. You'll learn a lot from one block, but you'll get most from signing up for both blocks each term.

A strong desire to write is required, and the motivation to produce more complete pieces of work.

  • What does it cover?

    1. Gain an understanding of the qualities that make for good writing, and apply this to your own work.
    2. Build your skills in specific aspects of the writing craft.
    3. Give and receive constructive comment.
    4. Edit a piece of your own work.

By the end of the course you should have made considerable progress in your chosen form. You will have gained confidence in your abilities as a writer and grown in your desire to go on with your writing

  • What will it be like?

The course will be run online using Zoom for the live class sessions and either the Moodle page for the course or some other system for the distribution of the electronic resources for the session sitting alongside this. Although there will be some adjustments that need to be made for the online version of this course, we will aim to keep the experience as close as possible to that of a face to face course taught in the Centre.

Writing exercises will be set for stimuli and discussion in class and homework assignments will be available for those who want them.

Students will be expected to be more self-determining and self-motivating and to be able to produce more sustained pieces.
Work is read out to the class. There is very good group support, with constructive and helpful feedback and an atmosphere of creativity and trust in the writing process. Students also regularly assess their own learning and progress throughout the term.

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

The course will be run on Zoom, please make sure you have installed it in advance of your first class on your computer or mobile device. You can sign up for free here:

    https://zoom.us/support/download

You will need a microphone (it's fine to use whatever is built into your device) and camera, so we can see you via video. You may also want to use headphones during the session.

You can participate in class sessions through the use of a computer, laptop, tablet or other similar internet enabled device. Please note that if you only have access to a smartphone, you will be able to attend the class sessions and participate in them but you will find it more difficult to benefit from the full range of materials and activities involved in the course if this is your only means of connection.

Make sure you have a small space to work in during the session and that as far as possible that you can keep this space quite and clear of interruption so that you can concentrate on what is happening in the class. By signing up to the course you are consenting to being on camera. The content of the lesson may occasionally be recorded by the tutor for internal education and training purposes but any such recordings will not be made available to anyone outside of the Mary Ward Centre organisation without us asking you again for further permission to do so.

Pen and paper. Regular writing time.

  • What could it lead to?

Students can go onto specialist writing courses, such as Write Here! Write Now! See the prospectus for more details.

Meet The Tutor

Course Detail

Roger Mills is an experienced tutor, working with beginner and improver creative writers. He is a published author of fiction and oral history, mainly connected with East London where he lives. His classes are informal in their approach, encouraging students to share their writing and discuss each other's work in a supportive, constructive, and confidential manner. Students' work effectively becomes the course resource material, all of us evaluating what works and what can be improved under the guidance of the tutor.
