This course is for students who have completed at least a year at Beginners level, and who are looking for more direction and commitment in their writing.
The course runs in two six-week blocks each term. You'll learn a lot from one block, but you'll get most from signing up for both blocks each term.
A strong desire to write is required, and the motivation to produce more complete pieces of work.
1. Gain an understanding of the qualities that make for good writing, and apply this to your own work.
2. Build your skills in specific aspects of the writing craft.
3. Give and receive constructive comment.
4. Edit a piece of your own work.
By the end of the course you should have made considerable progress in your chosen form. You will have gained confidence in your abilities as a writer and grown in your desire to go on with your writing.
Writing exercises will be set for stimuli and discussion in class and homework assignments will be available for those who want them.
Students will be expected to be more self-determining and self-motivating and to be able to produce more sustained pieces. The range of material that students bring to classes includes fiction, short stories, memoir and poetry - and even novels in progress.
Work is read out to the class. There is very good group support, with constructive and helpful feedback and an atmosphere of creativity and trust in the writing process. In each session Roger provides printed handouts and information sheets and extracts from the work of established writers. He will also provide homework exercises to help you to develop your writing. Students also regularly assess their own learning and progress throughout the term.
Pen and paper. Regular writing time.
Students can go onto specialist writing courses, such as Write Here! Write Now! See the prospectus for more details.

Roger Mills is an experienced tutor, working with beginner and improver creative writers. He is a published author of fiction and oral history, mainly connected with East London where he lives. His classes are informal in their approach, encouraging students to share their writing and discuss each other's work in a supportive, constructive, and confidential manner. Students' work effectively becomes the course resource material, all of us evaluating what works and what can be improved under the guidance of the tutor.
