Life Drawing - Short and Long Poses

A mixed level life drawing course using short and long poses, focusing on line, light, colour and composition. Explore the numerous differing influences from ancient far eastern to western mainstream.
  • Who is it for?

The course has a broad approach that allows participants of all abilities to work in the same space and benefit from our group exercises.
There will be weekly themes and steps to support the process for beginners. Advanced students will have challenges relating to the pose, and opportunities to develop personal direction.

  • What does it cover?

Each week will explore different concepts, so that students experience an array of techniques and possibilities. The course will emphasise the particularities of a long pose- it can be seen as a luxury, yet also an extended challenge. Your tutor will also serve to keep your ideas and energy on track through each project.

Topics covered throughout the course will include: Structure of the body, Proportions, Tonal Values, Colour Theory, Foreshortening of the Figure, Composition.

    Students will learn how to:

Think of the human body as a structure and the ability to use geometric shapes to construct the figure.

Apply colour theory, including concepts such as tone, harmony and contrast.

Consider the composition of your image- using placement, emphasis and direction to conjure a striking design.

Plan for a long project through a series of steps, from composing an initial drawing to planning out the layers of a painting.

  • What will it be like?

The start of the course, each session will begin with a 15 minute warm up pose, followed by an explanation of the week's lesson concept, before beginning the pose.

There will be a break mid lesson and group discussion at the end. Later in the term, long poses will begin with no warm up, and some poses will continue over multiple weeks.

The tutor will give you verbal feedback about your progress. There will be whole
    class reviews plus individual reviews.

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

Students should invest in willow charcoal sticks and graphite pencils.
Any other drawing or painting materials are individual choice, and can also be discussed individually with the tutor.

Sketchbooks are advised for smaller, quicker works.
Any other drawing or painting materials are individual choice.

Regular, daily sketchbook work will greatly improve any student's aptitude and is highly
    recommended.

  • What could it lead to?

Students can enrol on other courses offered by the Mary Ward Centre, for example, Foundation or
    Pre-foundation.
