Like any big city, London has suffered its share of tragedy over the centuries and Londoners resilience has been tested with many different types of disaster. We probably remember recent events such as the July 7 bombs and Grenfell fire, but many incidents, frightening or bizarre at the time, have all but disappeared from memory. From the tragic Hallsville School fire to the astonishing Great Beer Flood and the Bethnal Green tube disaster learn how these events occurred and what happened to Londoners.
Caryle will provide a powerpoint and relevant readings and documents on MOODLE. Although I will be giving you lots of information and, I hope, some entertainment there will be opportunities for you to share your opinions, knowledge and experience. By the end of course you will be able to look around London with a different understanding; you will have used some primary and secondary sources to widen your understanding, and you may have joined in group discussions.
By the end of this course you will:
• Be able to describe several disasters
• Appreciate the causes and consequences of them
• Have used secondary sources to develop your understanding
You might find it useful to have sight of the powerpoint either by downloading or digitally; you may also wish to make notes again either ‘old school’ manually or digitally. I will provide a list of sources (books, you tube, websites) if you wish to expand your studies but it’s not compulsory! I might also signpost relevant talks and walks.
There are other London history courses at MWC as well as general history classes, or the walking tour courses in the Summer term. If you are interested, you could also look at guiding courses or move to an accredited course at for example Birkbeck.
