Term1: Traditional and contemporary patchwork and quilting techniques. Term 2: Using appliqué in patchwork and quilting, Term 3: Using stitch and embellishment for patchwork and quilting.
  • Who is it for?

This course is aimed at people with no previous knowledge of patchwork and quilt making and for those wanting to broaden their skills and techniques.

  • What does it cover?

At the beginning of the course you will develop your skills and knowledge of quilt making techniques through making several small projects, considering both traditional and contemporary ideas for patchwork. These will include choosing and making a simple block quilt design, learning and experimenting with both hand and machine stitched techniques and completing textile work using backing fabrics, wadding and stitch.

Once you have learnt some quilt making techniques you will have the opportunity to work on your own personal project. You will learn how to use research to develop your design ideas and the importance of colour and pattern for textile projects to produce unique, beautiful and exciting quilted projects, for example your project may be a wall piece, quilt, purse, bag or cushion etc. Quilt making is a great technique for recycling materials, using small pieces of fabrics from previous projects or loved clothing & textile pieces which can be given a new life.

The course will include looking at work by other designers and makers of quilts as well as visiting an appropriate textile exhibition or textile collection as a group.

What students should be able to do by the end of the course.

    2.Use materials and techniques creatively.
