Sculpture: Mixed Media

The course is suitable for people of all levels of experience who have an interest in sculpture. Sculpture manifests an enormous diversity of forms and can mean many things to many people, and courses have benefited from the diversity within the group.

Explore a range of materials and techniques to build sculptures using mixed media which can include materials such as wood, textiles, photographs, found objects, recycled materials, ceramics ...
The course introduces the techniques, materials and processes for sculpting. You will use a wide range of media exploring approaches such as assemblage and bricolage. See Tate website: mixed media
Students will develop spatial, proportional and visual awareness. This can include the exploration of methods to create compositions, accurate observation and evaluation of your work, drawing to test ideas for your sculpture in its early stages, measuring techniques, the construction of simple maquettes and the possibilities of the application of colour. NB: Only relatively small sculptures are appropriate for this course.

By the end of the course you should be able to:
1. Produce finished sculpture
2. Have an initial understanding of construction methods for sculpture
3. Use simple casting techniques
4. Develop material compositions, chosen for their connotations and visual language
Additional objectives for returning learners:
6. Develop & practice techniques towards achieving individual sculpture projects

Specific learning objectives are set according to individual requirements of the student and may well include things not listed here. The tutor will discuss students' aims and objectives at the start of the course.

The course will be taught through demonstration, practice and discussion. Learners will be encouraged to explore their own personal approach, developing confidence & skills in a creative, exciting and supportive learning environment. The tutor will divide her time equally amongst all the students in the class.
Students' work will be regularly recorded with photographs, written progress reports, copies of sketchbooks, Blogs or other documentation. Assessment is given on a regular basis by direct personal consultation with the tutor, and reference to project records.
Each student is expected to identify, where possible, specific learning aims and objectives to be assessed at the beginning and end of the course.
Students will be encouraged to evaluate their own work through group discussion with and self- appraisal.
The course does not include any homework but students might enjoy testing out ideas by drawing in their sketchbooks in between teaching days.

Expenses will vary according to materials chosen, which whenever possible will be provided by the Centre at a cost. Basic sculpture materials and tools will be provided.
Students will benefit from an A4 Sketchpad or sketch book to use alongside the course.
What we expect you to do outside the class: whatever is appropriate for the individual goals/course plan. Students will be able to work at their own pace but where extra work is needed (say for portfolio preparation) they will be expected to do more.

Space is limited, so works can't be too large and there is a 7kg weight restriction.

Students may take further courses at the Mary Ward Centre. For example you may decide to explore ceramics for sculpture, carving, textiles or stained glass. You can also progress to the Foundation into Art or Pre-foundation courses at The Mary Ward Centre or elsewhere.
