  • What does it cover?

The emphasis of the course is on the spoken language and the understanding of spoken and written Spanish. The aim is to get to grips with the structure of the language, the use of pronouns and past tenses in particular.
Topics will include: giving opinions about shows and outings; handling simple phone calls; inviting people and arranging to meet; understanding and giving instructions; describing objects; describing people and places in the past; talking about your childhood.
Adjustments will be made to the topics to meet the students' needs and interests.

You will be working towards reaching A2 level of competency in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), incorporating these objectives:
    - Understand phrases and the highest frequency vocabulary related to areas of most immediate personal relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local area, employment). Catch the main point in short, clear, simple messages and announcements.
    - Read short, simple texts. Find specific, predictable information in simple everyday material such as menus and timetables and understand short simple personal letters.
    - Communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar topics and activities. Handle very short social exchanges, even though you may still find it hard to keep the conversation going yourself.
    - Use a series of phrases and sentences to describe in simple terms your family and other people, living conditions, your educational background and your job.
    - Write short, simple notes and messages relating to matters in areas of immediate needs. Write a very simple personal letter, for example thanking someone.
    - Use the present and past tenses with confidence.

  • What will it be like?

The course is taught in Spanish. Students listen and work with sound recordings in every lesson. Emphasis is on effective communication. There is a lot of conversation practice between the tutor and the group and in pairs. Errors are corrected where they relate to a specific language point being learned and where the message is confused. Where the meaning is conveyed, mistakes are not corrected since it impedes fluency. Reading and written exercises are usually given for homework.
Your tutor will assess your learning throughout the course and you will receive regular feedback. You will also have the opportunity to evaluate your own progress and discuss it with your tutor at the end of the course.

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

Pen, paper and a ring binder or folder.
The tutor will recommend a course book, grammar and language activities books as well as dictionaries.
In order to make real progress, students should work outside the class, practising the language, using the recommended books and photocopies given by the tutor, carrying out the tasks set for the week and following the tutor's particular recommendations for private study.

  • What could it lead to?

Students can continue onto a stage 3 course elsewhere, tutor to advise. Or some students may wish to consolidate their learning by repeating stage 2.
