Tai Chi/Chi Kung/Qigong

Start your week with a re-boot and re-balance to your body, mind and spirit! Tai Chi and Chi Kung (Qigong) are ancient Chinese martial arts that bring about personal transformation through movement, breath and meditation. Suitable for all levels of experience, the exercises are beneficial for the beginner and will work on a deeper level for those with more experience. The classes are based around gentle, rhythmic movements, that get under the radar to soften, destress and enhance your well-being.
  • Who is it for?

No previous experience of tai chi is necessary. These courses are mixed ability and suitable for all ages and experience. Tai chi is a safe and gentle activity, however, students with specific health problems should obtain their doctor's permission to attend classes and inform the tutor at the first session.

  • What does it cover?

The whole group will practise some chi kung (Qigong) breathing exercises plus warming-up and cooling-down exercises. The class content will respond to the changing seasons and their corresponding element. In winter for example we are in the element of WATER and will be looking at static and moving forms connected to WATER, our potential for change, it is fluidity and flow and it represents a state of rest in nature. We will explore its association with the bladder and kidney meridians and work with related tai chi forms.
Continuous assessment and verbal feedback will be given throughout the term
By the end of the course, students will have: increased body awareness; increased strength, flexibility, core stability and balance; a better understanding of their own physical capacities and limitations, the ability to focus/concentrate the mind for a short period of time (if practiced daily) and an introduction level understanding of philosophical principles of tai chi/chi kung

  • What will it be like?

Regular attendance and commitment to the full duration of each class is important. The initial setting up and final relaxation periods are particularly important therefore attendance for the full duration is encouraged.
Important note: Students running more than 15 minutes late may not be admitted. If possible, please advise the tutor of possible lateness. If arriving to class during the initial settling please remove your shoes and be as quiet as possible in order to not disturb your fellow students

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing and flat, soft shoes. Practice between sessions is encouraged.

  • What could it lead to?

Students may re-enrol each term or move on to the full Tai Chi/Chi Kung class at Mary Ward. Please note that places for following terms are not ring-fenced, so students who wish to continue should enrol in advance.
