Tai chi and chi kung (qigong) are ancient Chinese martial arts that bring about personal transformation through movement, breath, and meditation. Suitable for all levels of experience, the exercises are beneficial for beginners and will work on a deeper level for those with more experience. The classes are based around gentle, rhythmic movements, that get under the radar to soften, destress and enhance your well-being.
No previous experience of tai chi is necessary. These courses are mixed ability and suitable for all ages and experience. Tai chi is a safe and gentle activity, however, students with specific health problems should obtain their doctor's permission to attend classes and inform the tutor at the first session.
Each class begins with chi kung standing meditation (zhan zhuang) to cultivate awareness, calm the mind, and build internal strength, followed by dynamic warm-up exercises to stretch and strengthen the body with a focus on balance and hip mobility. The main portion of class is dedicated to step-by-step guidance through a traditional Yang style short form, with new postures introduced each week and linked to previous ones. Students then work in pairs on posture testing, exploring structure, alignment, and relaxation in each posture. Class closes with gentle breathwork to settle the body and mind, with time for questions.
Continuous assessment through physical and verbal feedback will be given throughout the term.
By the end of the course, students will have: increased body awareness; increased strength, flexibility, core stability and balance; a better understanding of their own physical capacities and limitations; the ability to focus and concentrate the mind (if practised daily); and an introduction-level understanding of the philosophical principles of tai chi and chi kung.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing and flat, soft shoes. Practice between sessions is encouraged.
Students may re-enrol each term or move on to the full Tai Chi/Chi Kung class at Mary Ward. Please note that places for following terms are not ring-fenced, so students who wish to continue should enrol in advance.
