  • Course Overview

    A one day workshop where beginners can learn a range of techniques and processes for creating

    enamelled jewellery. More advanced students may develop their own projects

    People who are interested in learning the basic techniques and surface decorations used in the beautiful art of enamelling.

    This course is suitable for absolute beginners although anyone with any experience of jewellery and sculpture making can still hugely benefit.

    Students will learn a range of enamelling techniques and how to prepare metal for enamelling. Students will learn several different surface texturing techniques such as hammer texture, use of rolling mills and the use of pendant drill to texture and drill.

    * Have a good basic knowledge of enamelling processes.

    * Be able to use all of the basic enamelling techniques.

    * Awareness of health and safety when enamelling,

    * Being able to use several surface decoration techniques for jewellery and sculpture

  • What will it be like?

    One to one dialogue, group discussion, tutor example, explanation and demonstration. Handouts will also be available, and a small selection of books and magazines.

    Continuous evaluation is achieved through one-to-one discussions between the tutor and the student and group discussions.

    Practical work produced is evidence of learning.

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

    This will depend on what you are wanting to do. Some materials, tools and equipment will be provided by the college. Additional materials are available to buy in-house and the tutor can advise about purchasing extra materials and equipment externally.

    Some students may want to prepare pieces which will be enamelled in class or use other jewellery classes to make items from their enamelled or textured metal.

    Keeping notes of techniques and ideas.

    Gathering visual research to inspire projects.

  • What could it lead to?

    Continue to make more of your own jewellery. Join the other jewellery classes or other art and craft courses at the Mary Ward centre and elsewhere. Progress to an accredited course e.g. the Mary Ward Centre Pre-foundation or Foundation in Art and design courses, or similar at another college. Those with high level skills in jewellery and who are seeking to set up as a practicing professional may wish to attend our course aimed at people who want to sell their products online.
