Who is this course for

This course is aimed at those with a basic knowledge of Ballroom dance. It has been devised for students who have untertaken a term of Ballroom Dance for Beginners, but can be taken by absolute beginners who already possess movement and coordination skills.

This course aims to introduce new dances and steps and put a greater emphasis on leading/following, timing and technique.

What does this course cover

Over the term you will be introduced to at least four Latin and Ballroom dances. You will explore the style and feeling of each dance; discovering how the dance fits to the music. You will learn to dance to the music with a focus on timing, acknowledging the correct rhythm for each dance.

At this improvers level there will be an emphasis on learning how to dance with a partner. This will focus both on developing a good hold and frame as well the art of leading or following.

Each week you will learn a selection of steps as well as recapping the basic step. Begin to understand how technique is applied to each dance in order to accentuate style.

By the end of the course you can expect to;
1. Dance basic and one or two additional steps in Waltz, Foxtrot, Cha Cha and Jive.
2. Understand the importance of timing and learn how to dance in time with the music.
3. Have a good hold and strong frame in order to dance with a partner effectively.
4. Understand the concept of leading and following and give/receive signals to/from a partner.

What will it be like

The tutor will demonstrate basic steps and then of offer helpful feedback on how to improve the execution of the steps whilst you practise.

Appropriate music will be selected to help develop timing and rhythm skills. Learners
will be taught in a group setting but much individual feedback is given to enable you to execute steps correctly.

There will be group discussions on the style and feeling of each dance and information will be given on the history and objectives of the dances. Learners will have the opportunity to ask questions regularly both in a group and one-to-one setting.

Students may ask for informal feedback from the tutor at any time.

What else do you need to buy or do

Participants should wear loose clothing comfortable for movement. Footwear should ideally be dance shoes or a suitable equivalent (low heeled shoes for women).

What this course could lead to

You will be able to recognise what dance fits to a certain piece of music and dance Ballroom and Latin steps socially. You may be able to take an improvers course locally. Your tutor will advise you on this.
