Biology Of Behaviour

Biological psychology investigates how our biology affects our thoughts, feelings and behaviour. On this one day workshop we will be looking at a number of different issues including how our biology affects our feelings of wellbeing, what happens in the brain when we sleep and when we dream and how our psychological feelings of stress can take its toll on the body.

Who is this course for

Anyone who is interested in understanding how our biology affects our psychology and behaviour. Students may have studied Psychology previously e.g. Introduction to Psychology, but this is not mandatory

What does this course cover

On this course we will be looking at the cutting edge science that is investigating how our body, brain and neurochemicals affect our mind and behaviour.
Topics to be covered include
- understanding the brain
- the biology of happiness and sadness
- how does the brain affect the body e.g. the effects of stress, psychosomatic illness
- sleep, dreaming, insomnia and other sleep disorders

What will it be like

A number of different methods will be used including didactic teaching, small and large group discussion. A number of case studies will be used (both written and video clips) to illuminate the academic psychology.
There is no formal assessment on this course, assessment will be through discussion and self assessment

Please bring pen and paper. A reading list will be provided for those that would like to study the topics in more depth

What this course could lead to

You may choose to study another Psychology course or it may inspire you to study another subject e.g. Philosophy or Anthropology at the Mary Ward Centre (see prospectus).
Some previous students have gone on to higher study in Psychology e.g. at Birkbeck
