Essential Digital Skills – L1

Do you need to improve your digital skills to help you in your job or to find work?
This qualification is for those who have some knowledge of using computers and is designed for to improve your IT skills required for the modern workplace.

Who is this course for

This qualification is designed for those who have some experience of using computers and want to gain a national recognised qualification. It can be the next step for students who have completed a EDSQ E3 or Entry Level ICT qualification course.
You will need access to a computer to practice on between classes and to complete your homework. Students must be committed to attend the whole course, complete homework, assignments and take the unit exams.
Please ensure you have at least E3/L1 English/ESOL. Not suitable for complete beginners.

What does this course cover

It is tutor-led throughout and is designed to build confidence of computing skills, knowledge and understanding. The areas covered in this course are:

o Using Devices and Handling Information
Use digital devices effectively, switching between multiple applications.
Identify and resolve a range of technical problems.
Find, download, store and organize information.

o Creating and Editing
Understand the structure of drives and folders and identify common file types.
Copy and move text, files and folders.
Create and format a range of documents using Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

o Communicating
Use email to send messages and files.
Organise email messages into folders.
Initiate a video call.

o Transacting
Complete transactions online using forms and accounts.
Compare options for products and using online services.
Identify and minimise risks while making payments online.

o Being Safe and Responsible Online
Act responsibly and appropriately when online.
Be aware of scams and other threats to devices or data.
Block unwanted email, voice or text messages.

You will cover all the areas required for the exams during the course. Each until has a practice exam which you will need to pass before you can enter the main unit exam. The tutor will manage your progress and advise you.
Once you have completed your 3 exams, this should prepare you to take further courses and / or apply your knowledge to your workplace, business or to help you find new job.

What will it be like

Teaching methods: Visual demonstrations using Smartboards, supported by written handouts with visual diagrams, one-to-one support and group discussions.
The tutor will closely monitor your work as well as questioning, observing progress, setting tasks and assessments with diagnosis.
Learning methods: Hands-on practical activities, Reading handouts and following instructions.
One-to-one and group discussion.

What else do you need to buy or do

You will need to have access to a computer or laptop to practice Office and to complete your homework.
Homework will be regularly set is will form part of your learning towards your qualification
Materials are supplied free of charge by the Centre, but you are advised to bring a memory stick to save your work.

What this course could lead to

ICDL Extra Level 2 qualification or other specialist IT / Computing course.
