Who is this course for

This course is suitable for students wanting to learn about glass fusing. It is suitable for beginners and those with some experience who want to develop their work further.

What does this course cover

The course will teach basic glass slumping and fusing techniques, how to safely cut glass and some basic design techniques. There are taught projects for the first part of the term and students can then develop their own projects for the second part of the course. We sometimes go on a class trip to a Gallery, and look at other makers work and different themes for inspiration.

What will it be like

The class is friendly and relaxed. Projects usually run for one or two weeks and aim to introduce students to basic glass fusing skills and how to begin designing for glass. Techniques are demonstrated and I also show lots of images to help generate ideas. I then see each student for a one to one chat to check that they are happy and clear about what they are doing.
Progress is monitored through tutorial support and self assessment.

What else do you need to buy or do

All materials for the first half of the term are provided, materials for personal projects should then be purchased by students, I can suggest suppliers during the course. We do also provide some frits for general use. It is helpful to have a sketchbook /notebook and to collect images for inspiration and visual reference.

What this course could lead to

Students can develop their skills further by progressing on to other Mary Ward Centre courses in Glass fusing and Projects or taking a course in Glass Painting; Stained Glass or Mosaic Art.
