History Of Film First Steps: Online

If you're a film buff, always been interested in films or just wonder how this wonderful film art came to be, then this is the perfect introductory course for you. This course is intended for all students regardless of their knowledge. The course will set you on a journey of film history like you have never known before. We will give an overview of key points in film history and is an ideal course for curious people wanting to learn more about their favourite art of entertainment.

Who is this course for

This course is appropriate for anyone interested in film history regardless of their previous knowledge. All levels are welcome. We will be working in a friendly atmosphere and cover an exciting introduction to film.

What does this course cover

By the end of the course, the students will be have a basic overview of:
1.Key film genres
2.Key film pioneers and their contributions to film
3.Key development of special effects and techniques used in films

What will it be like

The course will be a mix of interactive PowerPoint lecturing, incorporating short video extracts and visual (art) material as well as a range of student activities. These include analysing and reflecting on sources, pair and group work, analysis of provided material and participating in group discussion. We will learn about the film pioneer, film progress and film history while watching clips of films, YouTube videos and other audio-visual material. Teaching methods include visual demonstration with verbal explanation as well as written handouts and group discussions. The learning methods include hands-on practical activities, reading handouts and participating in group discussions.

How we assess your progress on the course
The progress will be assessed via displayed understanding of the lectured topic, via successful completion of interactive exercises, via participation in group discussions and finally through recognising audio-visual material.

The course will be run on Zoom, please make sure you have installed it in advance of your first class on your computer or mobile device. You can sign up for free here:


You will need a microphone (it's fine to use whatever is built into your device) and camera, so we can see you via video. You may also want to use headphones during the session.
Make sure you have a small space to work in during the session.
By signing up to the course you are consenting to being on camera. The content of the lesson may be recorded by the tutor for internal education and training purposes.

Students may want to bring a pen and a notebook to make notes.
However handouts and worksheets distributed via email.
