How Does Development Work?

Development and the history of development thinking is the history of economic and political thought, human progress and state formation. It tells a story of how societies and states have grown socially, economically, politically and culturally. It is a story concerned not only with the Global South but also with the historical development and present reality of the Global North. When we debate the fairness of the British aid budget or the effectiveness of the UN Millennial Development Goals, we are talking and thinking about development.

This course will help you understand the foundations of the discipline of development and its role in helping us think about contemporary global policy challenges such as ensuring poverty reduction, increased literacy, economic growth, human security, good governance and more effective state building measures.
