New: Authentic Jazz For Beginners
Venture back to the 1920s styles, transform yourself into a true Flapper! You will learn how to
dance the basic steps and moves of this energetic and fun solo dance, with original Jazz music. You
will also learn a cheeky and easy Charleston routine while improving your musicality, improvisation
skills and styling. A great way to have fun and improve your fitness whilst learning a unique and
impressive new skill.
Who is this course for
This is a course for beginners, No previous experience is needed to enjoy this course. Students with experience in dance and performing arts are also welcome.
What does this course cover
Charleston became a dance craze in the 1920's. You will gain an insight into the origin and history of this dance through learning the basic steps and patterns to feel confident on the dance floor, progressing into learning original and more challenging choreographed routine .
The course will include: Warm up and stretch, history and origin of Jazz dancing and the Charleston, Charleston as social and performing dance, musicality, basic Authentic Jazz foot work, more challenging dance sequence, learning a choreographed piece, style and improvisation.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
- Demonstrate learning a new dance style
- Perform a Charleston & Authentic Jazz dance routine
- Improving social dancing skills and free style.
What will it be like
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
- Follow spoken instructions.
- Use numbers to recognise musical phrasing within dance.
- Work within groups and pairs safely.
Parts of the class will be video recorded during the term for assessment purpose
Students will receive regular feedback from the tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate
What else do you need to buy or do
There is no work outside the class. The course will be taught verbally, through demonstration and with the use of music. Some paper hands for the students will be provided by the teacher.
Please wear clothing that does not restrict your movement and allows you to adapt to changes in your body temperature. The classes are best undertaken in jazz shoes or comfortable shoes with non-grip soles, for this reason trainers or are not recommended.

You can enrol onto the next course. Use the Charleston and its influence on other dance styles such as Lindy hop, Tap dancing and Hip Hop.
