We are now spending so much more time at home so comfort is more important than ever. Be inspired and learn a new skill to create a beautiful accessory for your home. The course will be run via Zoom, please make sure you have installed in in advance of your first class. Classes will involve some self study and information being sent to you via email or Moodle.

Who is this course for

This course is suitable for anyone with a love of fabric and crafts. A beginner's knowledge of sewing machines and sewing basics is desirable but not essential as we will also explore hand sewing techniques.

What does this course cover

The course will start by introducing you to a variety of quick and easy projects. Techniques will include piping, frills, and simple patchwork, for you to use to design and make an envelope cushions, a box cushion or a bolster. You will learn how to source ideas, use detail and decorative embellishment, combine colours, plan your design, choose fabrics, apply measurements, and work out how much fabric you will need to lay and cut out your design. You will use a sewing machine or hand sewing techniques to make up and finish your cushion using the range of new skills you have learnt on the course.

By the end of the course you should be able to:
o Identify different cushion styles
o Take accurate measurements and estimates of fabric for cushions
o Select the most appropriate fabrics and colours for your project
o Cut fabric correctly and accurately avoiding waste
o Discover simple sewing techniques to create a professional finishUse a sewing machine with care observing health and safety rules.

o Paper scissors
o Small pointed scissors or snippers
o Stitch ripper or quick-unpick
o Metric tape measure
o Lots of fine steel pins
o Tailors chalk
o Fabric per cushion
o Sewing thread to match fabric
o Zip (if using)

You will need a microphone (it's fine to use whatever is built into your device) and camera, so we can see you via video. You may also want to use headphones during the session.

You can participate in class sessions through the use of a computer, laptop, tablet or other similar internet enabled device. Please note that if you only have access to a smartphone, you will be able to attend the class sessions and participate in them but you will find it more difficult to benefit from the full range of materials and activities involved in the course if this is your only means of connection.

Make sure you have a small space to work in during the session and that as far as possible that you can keep this space quiet and clear of interruption so that you can concentrate on what is happening in the class.

By signing up to the course you are consenting to being on camera. The content of the lesson may occasionally be recorded by the tutor for internal education and training purposes but any such recordings will not be made available to anyone outside of the Mary Ward Centre organisation without us asking you again for further permission to do so.
