New: Mind And Body: Introduction To The Psychology Of Health

Health psychology is an area of research and
practice that focuses on the link between our
psychology and our physical health. On this course
we will be looking at a number of fascinating areas
including the link between physical and psychological
health, psychosomatic illness and psychological
approaches to health and behaviour change. If you
are interested in understanding the link between
mind and body and what research shows us about
improving our physical and psychological health you
will enjoy this one day course.

Who is this course for

No previous knowledge of psychology is required for this course although students may have attended other Psychology classes. This course may be of particular interest to those that work in coaching, counselling, support roles etc but everyone is welcome!

What does this course cover

Health is a fundamental basic need for our continued development and wellbeing. On this course we will look at the psychology of health, asking questions and finding out the latest research theories and findings on the following;
- what is psychosomatic illness? How is physical and psychological illness linked?
- the placebo effect. How does a sugar pill alleviate physical symptoms?
- what can we learn from psychological research to boost our health and wellbeing?
By the end of the day you will have a better understanding of the current theories and research on the psychology of health and will have reflected on these for your own health.

What will it be like

A number of different methods will be used including didactic teaching, small and large group discussion. A number of case studies will be used (both written and video clips) to illuminate the academic psychology. You will self assess your progress as well as being assessed by your tutor through analysis of your discussion.

What else do you need to buy or do

An optional reading list will be provided. To benefit fully from this course it is recommended that students complete the recommended reading. You will need to bring pen and paper and an enquiring mind!
