Who is this course for

This is a beginners course to learn Patchwork and Quilting techniques to make a lap sized quilt, approximately 140cmx140cm (55'x55'). More advanced students can join if they would like to try a new project.

What does this course cover

You will be making a lap sized quilt using a Charm Pack and solid/plain fabric bought by the metre. Charm Packs are very convenient as they contain an assortment of fabrics with coordinating prints, all 5 inches square with usually 40 per pack. Charm squares and solid colour fabric can be used together to produce beautiful patchwork designs. You will need to buy your Charm Pack and other materials in advance, please see the materials list below.

This course will take you through the whole process of making a lap sized quilt. This will include:

- Cutting the fabric to the required size.
- How to assemble the quilt blocks (these are smaller units which are then stitched together).
- Ironing seams.
- Stitching the quilt blocks together to make your quilt top.
- How to back and quilt your project, both machine and hand stitched quilting techniques will be demonstrated.
- Making and stitching a binding for your finished quilt.

The course will involve using a sewing machine, therefore basic knowledge of how to use a sewing machine would be an advantage. There will be an introduction to using the sewing machines at the start of the course. The hand stitching will involve tacking your quilt prior to quilting as well as some hand stitch quilting stitches which will be optional to use.

By the end of the course you should be able to

1. Demonstrate patchwork and quilting techniques to complete a project.
2. Use materials and techniques creatively.
3. Understand basic colour theory and its importance to patchwork and quilting.

What else do you need to buy or do

Materials for Lap Quilt - Summer School Sept 7th , 8th , 9th 2020.

For this patchwork quilt design you will stitch the charm pack squares into groups of four and these will be arranged with larger squares cut from the focus fabric. The focus fabric works well with large and small fabric prints and is a lovely way to show off the design of the fabric. We will construct the quilt top, make a quilt sandwich with the quilt top/wadding/backing fabric. Once quilted a binding will be added. Demonstrations and handouts will be provided during the course for all the steps to make a quilt. Below are the fabric requirements for a Lap size quilt and a Double size quilt.
