Sculpture Techniques: Carving

Who is this course for

The course is suitable for people of all levels of experience who have an interest in sculpture and carving. Sculpture manifests an enormous diversity of forms and can mean many things to many people, and the courses has benefited from the mixed ablities and diversity within the group.

What does this course cover

These 6 week course offers a formal introduction to all basic techniques materials and processes of carving in wood or soft stone.

Healthy and safe working practices. Inspiration will be drawn from imagination and/or observation of natural forms and the work of other artists.
Students can try out the techniques over 6 weeks or work in more depth over 12 weeks.

The tutor will suggest projects and ideas for works when appropriate.
Students will develop spatial, proportional and visual awareness. Explore methods of composition to include accurate observation, drawing for sculpture, measuring techniques and construction of maquettes.

NB: Only relatively small pieces of soft stone or wood are appropriate for this course.

By the end of the course you will be able to:
1. Produce Finished Pieces of sculpture in soft stone or wood
2. Acquire a comprehensive carving technique in your chosen material.
3. Develop carving skills and work on individual carving projects.
4. Learn finishing techniques such as polishing & mounting

Additional objectives for returning learners:
5. Develop & practice techniques towards achieving individual carving projects

Specific learning objectives are set according to individual requirements of the student and may well include things not listed here. The tutor will discuss students'aims and objectives at the start of the course.

What will it be like

The course will be taught through demonstration, practice and discussion with particular emphasis on sound and careful technique to ensure a strong and successful end result.

The tutor will divide his time equally amongst all the students in the class.

Students' work will be regularly recorded with photographs, written progress reports, copies of sketchbooks, Blogs or other documentation.
Assessment is given on a regular basis by direct personal consultation with the tutor, and reference to project records.

Each student is expected to identify where possible specific learning aims and objectives to be assessed at the end of the term.

Students will be encouraged to evaluate their own work through group discussion with fellow students and self appraisal.

What else do you need to buy or do

Costs will vary according to materials chosen, which wehenever possible will be provided by the Centre at a cost. Students wishing to carve in stone will be expected to cover the cost of the material and some tools. Stone is currently £35 per stone, Carving tools approx £15.00 each.
Whatever is appropriate for the individual goals/course plan. Students will be able to work at their own pace but where extra work is needed (say for portfolio preparation) they will be expected to do more. Space is limited, so works can't be too large and there is a 7kg weight restriction.

What this course could lead to

Students may take further courses at the Mary Ward Centre. For example you may decide to do a cast on a piece of your work Casting and Finishing class, or progress to full figure clay modelling.

Past students have progressed to exhibiting and selling their work, and have successfully applied for and completed Degree and Masters courses in Fine Art, Sculpture and Design.

You can also progress to the Foundation into Art or Pre-foundation courses at The Mary Ward Centre or elsewhere.

Apart from pursuing careers as sculptors, students have moved into such diverse careers such as:

* Anatomical model making * Retail display * Visual effects or theatrical properties * Fashion * Architecture * Fine Arts
