Sewing Machine Masterclass (Beginners – Zips – Centre, Lapped And Concealed

Available Classes:

Who is this course for

These Sewing Machine Masterclasses are designed for people who can already sew by machine and hand but may need to brush up on their skills and learn new ones. It is a very good add-on class for students attending our other fashion and textile courses as we will cover all sorts of techniques; zips, darts, gathers, waistbands, facings, pockets, sleeves and more. After this course you will be able to confidently apply the different techniques you have learnt to all those projects you want to make.

What does this course cover

You will learn a selection of techniques needed to be able to make your own clothes, crafts and other textile projects. There are nine titles in the series for you to explore over the three terms. The tutor will introduced you to a different technique each week and you will apply it in a fun and creative way. Skills will develop as you practice on a new project each week. So that you are fully prepared you will need to bring a selection of materials to the classes. Your tutor will contact you with a list prior to the course.

'The thing I like best about these courses are the fun projects we do to enable us to practice and learn the many different techniques' P. Nichols (student 03.20)

By the end of these courses you will be able to:
- Demonstrate a selection of machine sewing techniques
- Use the sewing machine with increased confidence
- Produce a range of sewing samples for future reference
All courses will include:
- Laying and cutting
- Marking up
- Pressing and finishing

What will it be like

Learning will be facilitated by individual guidance and support from the tutor as well as peer centred learning. Skills and knowledge will be learned initially through visual demonstrations and verbal descriptions then students will work independently with one to one tutor advice and assistance. This will be supported by hand-outs. Students will be encouraged to comment about each other's work (peer centred learning).

Your progress is monitored by tutor feedback and end of course self-assessment. Individual advice is always available and verbal feedback, support and encouragement is given to you throughout the course.
- Questions and answers during group discussions and one-to-one teaching.
- Practical work produced is evidence of learning.
- At the end of the course we will review and assess the work.

What else do you need to buy or do

So that you are fully prepared you will need to bring the following materials/equipment to each class. Some class may need other items - we will let you know.

1 to 2 metres of cotton fabric for each class (lightweight calico is good)
Notebook
Pencils and pen
Fabric scissors
Hand sewing needles
Sewing thread white - strong and fine, similar to Gutermann sew all thread.
Small sharp pointed scissors and stitch ripper or quick-unpick
