Singing For Beginners

This singing class is for those who want an introduction to singing. Perfect for those who sing in the bath or who have just started to find their own voice. Learn to enjoy singing in a group context, and develop a solid singing technique. No previous singing necessary, just a desire to learn more.

Tutor Bio: Cecilia Forssberg grew up in Stockholm, Sweden where she attended one of Sweden's finest music colleges, Stockholms Musik Gymnaisum, specialising in choral singing. Before moving to London she spent many years working at youth camps, working with young people and setting up theatre and music productions. Cecilia has been teaching at Mary Ward since 2018 and runs a variety of music groups and classes for the college.

Who is this course for

For complete beginners as well as those who have some experience but want to expand their repertoire, learn more of the basics of singing and increase general musicality. This course is for anyone who loves to sing but lacks confidence and experience and who wants to learn about and explore their voice in a friendly group setting.

What does this course cover

We will cover the basic building blocks of healthy singing, connecting body and mind to the creation of sound. We will explore different ways of singing as well as some rhythm and harmony work. The repertoire will cover a wide range of music styles from more traditional to contemporary. We will work in session and there will be opportunities for self-study.

What will it be like

You will learn to listen to your own voice and to others. We will work on breathing, posture and support and we will incorporate different exercises to build strength in the vocal organs. Simple sight-reading skills will be introduced for those unable to read music, and we will learn both through reading music and by ear. There will be the opportunity for an end of course concert for family and friends.

The Singing for Beginners course will revert to online delivery, via conferencing software app Zoom, should it become necessary. You will then be able to talk with and see the other members of the class, but the singing will take place predominantly with muted microphones, so you will get used to hearing your own voice! We may at times unmute to sing together.
There will also be video and audio content for you to use in-between the sessions.
There will be weekly activities to give you the opportunity to submit something, audio or writing. We will be working towards recording a song by the end of the six weeks and these + attendance will form the basis of your assessment.

What else do you need to buy or do

Nothing, just come along and enjoy the experience.

In the event that classes revert to online delivery, it will be run on Zoom - please make sure you have installed it in advance of the session, either on your computer or mobile device. You can sign up for free here:

You will need a microphone (it's fine to use whatever is built into your device) and camera, so we can see you via video. You may also want to use headphones during the session.

You can participate in class sessions through the use of a computer, laptop, tablet or other similar internet enabled device. Please note that if you only have access to a smartphone, you will be able to attend the class sessions and participate in them but you will find it more difficult to benefit from the full range of materials and activities involved in the course if this is your only means of connection.

Make sure you have a small space to work in during the session and that as far as possible that you can keep this space quite and clear of interruption so that you can concentrate on what is happening in the class.

By signing up to the course you are consenting to being on camera. The content of the lesson may occasionally be recorded by the tutor for internal education and training purposes but any such recordings will not be made available to anyone outside of the Mary Ward Centre organisation without us asking you again for further permission to do so.
