Who is this course for

Ideal for those who have a bit of singing experience, perhaps a couple of terms of the Singing for Beginners at Mary Ward and who are starting to feel more confident in their abilities and willing to challenge themselves more, singing in both smaller and bigger groups. You do not need to be able to read music, however we might cover some music notation in class.

What does this course cover

This is a new course and will be very much guided by the level of the class. We will focus on healthy singing, as well as developing interpretation, rhythm and performance technique. Students will learn listening and harmony skills and there will be room for improvisation work.
The repertoire will cover a wide range of music styles from more traditional to contemporary.

What will it be like

You will learn to listen to your own voice and to others. We will work on breathing, posture and support and we will incorporate different exercises to build strength in the vocal organs. Simple sight-reading skills will be introduced for those unable to read music, and we will learn both through reading music and by ear. There will be the opportunity for an end of course concert for family and friends.
The Singing for Improvers course will revert to online delivery, via conferencing software app Zoom, should it become necessary. You will then be able to talk with and see the other members of the class, but the singing will take place predominantly with muted microphones, so you will get used to hearing your own voice! We may at times unmute to sing together.
There will also be video and audio content for you to use in-between the sessions.
There will be weekly activities to give you the opportunity to submit something, audio or writing. We will be working towards recording a song by the end of the six weeks and these + attendance will form the basis of your assessment.

What else do you need to buy or do

Nothing, just come along and enjoy the experience.
