Yoga: Back To Basics – Online
Suitable for beginners and those who wish to go back to basics. Experience for yourself how yoga can help improve posture, balance, strength and flexibility as well as calm the mind. Enjoy a mixture of basic yoga postures (asanas) to stretch and strengthen the body as well as guided relaxation to further quieten the mind.
Who is this course for
This is a gently invigorating class suitable for all levels: students wishing to be introduced to the practice of yoga and/or those wishing to develop a slower practice. Learn to elevate your yoga practice by cultivating greater body awareness and attuning in your postures. A focus on healthy alignment and an introduction to breathing practices (pranayama) and meditation will build endurance and physical fitness as well as cultivate greater clarity and calm. Suitable for beginners who want to deepen their practice and more experienced practitioners who want to get back to basics.
What does this course cover
The class will include:
- An initial relaxation period
- Pranayama (breath awareness practices)
- A gently invigorating sequence of Asanas (postures)
- A final guided relaxation
- A deeper understanding of concentration & meditation practice
- Have increased body awareness
- Have increased balance, strength and flexibility
- Have a better understanding of the workings of your physical and energetic body
- Ability to recognise the signs of stress and tension and use yogic techniques to relieve these symptoms
- Ability to meditate for a short amount of time (if practiced daily)
- Have a general understanding of the philosophical principles of the yogic practice
These learning outcomes are reliant upon regular practice, effort and a willingness to meet these objectives, and willingness to experiment and try to apply yogic practices in daily life.
What will it be like
The course will be run online using Zoom for the live class sessions and either the Moodle page for the course or some other system for the distribution of the electronic resources for the session sitting alongside this. Although there will be some adjustments that need to be made for the online version of this course, we will aim to keep the experience as close as possible to that of a face to face course taught in the Centre.
A medical checklist needs to be filled by all on the first session
- Physical demonstration, oral explanations and hands-on adjustments to postures
- Variations of postures will be given as required by individual needs
- Occasional hand-outs will be given when relevant and helpful for home practice
Regular attendance and commitment to the full duration of each class is vital in order to assess your progress effectively. Progress in yoga is an individual journey. A leaner physique, improved flexibility and a relaxed state of mind can all be by-products of dedication to a regular practice, but are not the sole aim of the yogic journey
What else do you need to buy or do
The course will be run on Zoom, please make sure you have installed it in advance of your first class on your computer or mobile device. You can sign up for free here:
You will need a microphone (it's fine to use whatever is built into your device) and camera, so we can see you via video. You may also want to use headphones during the session.
You can participate in class sessions through the use of a computer, laptop, tablet or other similar internet enabled device. Please note that if you only have access to a smartphone, you will be able to attend the class sessions and participate in them but you will find it more difficult to benefit from the full range of materials and activities involved in the course if this is your only means of connection.
Make sure you have a small space to work in during the session and that as far as possible that you can keep this space quite and clear of interruption so that you can concentrate on what is happening in the class.
By signing up to the course you are consenting to being on camera. The content of the lesson may occasionally be recorded by the tutor for internal education and training purposes but any such recordings will not be made available to anyone outside of the Mary Ward Centre organisation without us asking you again for further permission to do so.
Wear loose comfortable clothing that does not restrict movements (sports top, loose sports trousers, T-shirts) and that do not restrict your breath. Practice is done barefoot (or with anti-slip socks if you do not wish to be barefoot.)
You are welcome to bring your own mat, or a towel if you wish to place over the mats that are provided.
You should come to class on an empty stomach or have waited at least 2 hours before coming to class. It is preferable not to drink water during class, however have water with you to drink after class.
Students wishing to have water in the studio should bring a bottle or cup, as the fountain there is designed for filling only.
