Through a series of practical exercises and demonstrations, the day will explore a range of simple but effective drawing techniques that help artists observe more carefully and translate what they see onto paper. These may include approaches to line, tone, proportion, composition and spatial awareness, as well as different ways of building a drawing step by step.
Rather than focusing on producing a finished artwork, the emphasis is on learning methods that make drawing clearer, more accurate and more confident. You will experiment with a variety of techniques and discover which approaches work best for you.
Teaching is informal and supportive, with demonstrations, group discussion and plenty of one-to-one guidance throughout the day. The aim is to help participants develop practical skills while gaining confidence and enjoyment in drawing.
By the end of the workshop you will have a better understanding of how artists approach drawing, along with a set of techniques you can continue to practise and develop in your own time.
No previous experience is necessary — complete beginners are very welcome.
Basic drawing materials will be available, but if you have them please bring a sketchbook or drawing pad, a few soft pencils (around 2B–6B), an eraser and a pencil sharpener.
