Silver Jewellery Workshop

The 'Silver Jewellery Workshop' provides an opportunity for students of all levels to come along to create their own jewellery under the tuition of experienced jeweller Sally Lees. Students will benefit from Sally's extensive knowledge of jewellery making including her skills in jewellery making techniques using aluminium, silver, brass and copper to complete projects and start new ones. Students can bring their own silver or use the silver making techniques on copper or brass that is provided. Advanced students can bring their projects from previous classes to complete with close guidance and advice.
  • Who is it for?

    This course is aimed at both beginners and students experienced in jewellery making. Beginners will be taught basic jewellery making skills to make an item of jewellery. Experienced jewellery making students can use the workshop, its facilities and benefit from having an experienced tutor to guide them through their projects with top tips and tricks.

  • What does it cover?

    Basic jewellery making skills for beginners - Designing a piece of jewellery using the following techniques - sawing with a specialist jewellery saw, drilling, soldering, filing and finishing off.
    Design and construction advice and top tips tailored to advanced jewellery making students and access for advance and intermediate students to use the workshop facilities and equipment that they may not have at home - soldering and polishing equipment.

    Learning outcomes - by the end of the course students should be able to:

    1. Beginners - design jewellery item(s) using various appropriate techniques / Advanced - design jewellery item(s) using advanced techniques
    2. Beginners - cut, solder, drill, file, polishing techniques / Advanced - improve techniques to a high standard
    3. Beginners - Identify appropriate techniques / Advanced - Identify appropriate advanced techniques
    4. Beginners - Complete an item of jewellery to a good standard / Advanced - Finish off items of jewellery to a high standard

    The course will be taught to the beginners in stages. Demonstrations of how to saw with a specialist jewellery saw, file metal, drill, solder, polish, texture and shape metal. Hand-outs and YouTube tutorials. Introduction to the Internet to research jewellery examples and inspiration.
    At the beginning of the course Sally will spend time with each student to discuss design ideas and appropriate techniques to enable students to make their items of jewellery.
    Advanced students will benefit from one to one tutorials in the required amount of time to advise them of techniques needed to achieve their goals.

    Continuous assessment of jewellery making and students jewellery.
    Students will work in a relaxed atmosphere to be able to create beautiful and technically competent jewellery and will be able to learn from each other in this environment.

  • What will it be like?

    Teaching methods: Visual demonstration and verbal explanation. Written handouts with visual diagrams. One-to-one teaching. Group discussions

    Learning methods: Hands-on practical activities, Reading handouts and following instructions.
    One-to-one and group discussion.

    How students are assessed: Questions and answers during group discussions and one-to-one teaching.

    Record of students' progress and achievement on an assessment sheet as they achieve the course objectives. Practical work produced is evidence of learning.

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

    Brass and copper and aluminium are provided.
    Students must bring their own silver
    We can recommend where to buy the silver from in advance.
    Bring their sketch books and pencil and inspirational material.
    Advanced students should bring their projects with them and other materials they wish to use.
    Students need to wear shoes with toes covered - No sandals or flipflops
    Homework : Students must read handouts and safety information
