Students will learn a variety of traditional and contemporary hand-building techniques including coiling, slab-building, carving, and modeling. The course will also cover surface decoration, glazing, and an introduction to firing processes. Emphasis will be placed on individual creative development, with inspiration drawn from nature, the human form, abstract concepts, and historical or contemporary ceramic artists.
Explore the possibilities of modelling in clay, taking inspiration from contemporary sculpture, work from found objects to develop your imagination, explore techniques of modelling, casting and transform forms according to your imagination. All levels of experience welcome
Participants will be encouraged to work on both guided and self-directed projects, culminating in a final piece or series of works that reflect their personal style and learning journey.
What You Will Learn:
Fundamental ceramic sculpture techniques
Working with clay bodies and tools
Building structural forms and armatures
Texturing, carving, and surface design
Introduction to glazing and finishing
Health and safety in the ceramics studio
Critical discussion and feedback on work
Who Is This Course For?
Open to all levels, from beginners to experienced makers. No prior experience is necessary — just an interest in clay and creative exploration.
You will work individually or in small groups supported by the tutor.
You will work on one main piece of sculpture per term.
The tutor will offer practical demonstrations of techniques.
Slides and videos may be used.
One-to-one assessment is carried out by the tutor.
Verbal feedback is given, in relaton to your proposed aims.
Some individual and group presentation of a completed piece with verbal feedback from the group.
Please note that no class will take place on 27th October.
Materials:
Basic tools and some clay provided. Students may need to purchase additional materials depending on their project.
