This course is for musicians to work together towards performance standard. Open to violin, viola, cello and double-bass players, working in independent groups of four or more, one player to a part, with coaching from experienced tutors. You may join one or both of the sessions. In Session 2, one of the groups is a larger string orchestra, which works with a conductor. Please attend the first class of term to be grouped appropriately.

The class is open to players of violin, viola, double bass and cello, who have been playing for at least 3 years.

No previous chamber music experience is necessary, but students must be able to read music.

At the first session the tutors will assess students to form playing groups. Because we need to match instruments, experience levels and personalities, we may not be able to offer you a place each term.

We will keep a list of reserve players who may be called upon if a place becomes available during the

    course.

The aim of the course is to learn to work together in a group to achieve performance standard in at least one work of chamber music each term.

The choice of repertoire is made by the tutor in negotiation with the individual groups.

You will also be invited to take part in the end of-of-term concert (if possible with Covid restrictions).

    You will learn to:

    1. play music together in a group more fluently and accurately.

    2. listen more analytically to identify problems.

    3. learn rehearsal techniques to improve intonation, style and rhythmic ensemble.

  • What will it be like?

At the beginning of the course, the tutor will arrange small groups of players agreed to be of similar ability and experience.

Groups will be expected to work by themselves with some tutor coaching each session. Tutors will give advice on selection of music, technical problems and rehearsal methods.

One of the groups is a string orchestra and works with a conductor for the whole session.

Assessment is by tutor feedback and student self-assessment. Most of the feedback is given verbally directly to the group. Alongside this the groups will be encouraged to keep a record of the progress of each piece they are working on. This provides a record for students and tutors.

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

Students must have their own instrument and bow in good working order - advice given at all times.

Although some music is available at the Centre, students should buy their own wherever possible. Some music stands are provided; however we recommend you bring your own.

Students are expected to practise their part for the music they are studying between classes, during holidays and before end-of-term concerts.

Groups are encouraged to meet and practise outside the Centre, especially during holiday times.

  • What could it lead to?

Students who have reached the required standard and have enough confidence should be able to form their own independent groups and attend some of the many residential chamber music courses held at various venues throughout the year.
