This immersive natural dye course introduces students to the heritage and science of indigo dyeing using environmentally friendly methods. Participants will learn how to:
Create and maintain a fructose-based indigo vat (chemical-free and beginner-friendly)
Apply traditional shibori resist and tie-dye techniques
Use plant-based fixatives and mordants to set natural colour
Understand basic pH principles for dyeing success
Experiment with upcycled fabrics and sustainable textile practices
This course is ideal for beginners, creatives, and anyone interested in regenerative design, slow fashion, or learning a traditional dyeing technique in a modern, supportive setting.
The sessions will be practical, creative, and exploratory. You’ll be working in a relaxed studio environment with expert guidance. Expect group discussions, demonstrations, and time for your own experiments with fabric and pattern-making
We will provide all the basic equipment you need for the course. Materials will be sourced sustainably
You can further your journey into textiles by joining other courses in natural dyeing, sustainable fabric sourcing, eco-printing, sewing, or pattern cutting offered at Mary Ward Centre. You may also wish to explore how to integrate natural dyes into your art, fashion, or upcycling projects.
