  • Course Overview

    The course is for beginners and learners who have some experience of Clothesmaking and have some previous garment making skills.

    You will learn the necessary skills to:

    Use a sewing machine and learn how to thread and wind the bobbin correctly.

    Produce a range of samples of different sewing techniques. E.g. gathering, darts.

    Take accurate body measurements and compare to pattern to select size.

    Produce a simple garment using a commercial pattern (this will be advised by the tutor at the beginning of the course) N.B. This course does not include pattern making.

    Select an appropriate fabric for the chosen pattern.

    Cut out and lay up the pattern correctly on to fabric.

    Identify a basic range of fabrics and their characteristics and understand fabric construction.

    Interpret and read pattern instructions

    Build up a portfolio/file of different sewing techniques.

    You must be able to take notes.

    Please note: This course is not run as a workshop, and learners will be expected to follow the course programme and tutor set projects. Learners must attend regularly to ensure progress.

  • What will it be like?

    Skills and knowledge will be learned by observing demonstrations with verbal instructions, practical work, one-to-one and group work and discussions. Learner’s progress will be recorded on an Individual learning plan with written and verbal feedback from the Tutor.

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

    Tutor will advise on the first lesson of what equipment to purchase. Sewing machines and some basic equipment is provided, however learners will be expected to purchase their own sewing kit, consisting of a measuring tape, pins, scissors, sewing needles, threads and marking chalk). Whatever garment you make, you will need to buy a pattern, fabric, trimmings, threads and all the equipment needed to complete it, this will vary depending on the fabric and pattern purchased.

  • What could it lead to?

    Learners can progress to the next Clothes making course.
