  • Course Overview

Trees are remarkable living entities that routinely grow larger and live longer than we do and their presence on the planet is essential for human life. Trees have always inspired artists and poets ,with myths and legends about them appearing throughout world cultures.

Students will be given a brief overview of the structure and function of trees then will practice drawing different aspects of tree forms in dry media. Students will learn tips and techniques on how to render trees in acrylic paint.

Students will explore how selected artists have drawn and painted trees and apply the techniques they have learned to their own personal project

The course is aimed at anyone with general and intermediate skill levels in art and design with an interest in exploring trees through art. It is not a course teaching fundamental drawing and painting skills, please see other areas of the curriculum offer for this.

  • What will it be like?

The tutor will deliver audio visual presentations via power point, provide a range of visual resources, and set project briefs based on the themes of the workshop. The tutor will introduce different art media and methods of working as a suggested approach to individual projects.

A project may be completed in the workshop or advice will be given on how to continue outside of the session. There will be no formal assessment. There will be opportunities for individual tutorials, peer review and group discussion.

The tutor encourages students to make reflective notes of their learning and progress through the course. Students will be supported to adopt a positive attitude towards their own and others work as the course is progressing.

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

An A4 unlined thick cartridge sketchbook for notes and practice pieces. Wear clothes suitable for art practice, students can bring their own protective apron if they have one. Basic materials such as brushes and paints, will be provided .

Students may wish to bring along a photograph or a favourite painting of a tree for inspiration and reference.
