  • Course Overview

Henri Matisse achieved notoriety as fauvist artist and brought a new direction to art at the beginning of the 20th century .

These ideas will be discussed alongside a brief overview of the artist’s life and works. Students will observe the flattened forms, decorative patterns and vivid non naturalistic colours in Matisse’s paintings and experiment with these approaches.

Students will explore selected examples of Henri Matisse’s portraits, and landscapes paintings and be supported to make their own inspired creative responses to one or more of these themes. There may also be a possibility to explore Matisse’s later work of cut outs and collage, depending on the time available.

The workshop is aimed at anyone with general and intermediate skill levels in art and design with an interest in exploring the life and works of Henri Matisse . It is not a course teaching fundamental drawing and painting skills, please see other areas of the curriculum offer for this.

  • What will it be like?

The tutor will deliver audio visual presentations via power point, provide a range of visual resources, and set project briefs based on the themes of the workshop. The tutor will introduce different art media and methods of working as a suggested approach to individual projects.

A project may be completed in the workshop or advice will be given on how to continue outside of the session. There will be no formal assessment. There will be opportunities for individual tutorials, peer review and group discussion.

The tutor encourages students to make reflective notes of their learning and progress through the course. Students will be supported to adopt a positive attitude towards their own and others work as the course is progressing.

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

An A4 unlined thick cartridge sketchbook for notes and practice pieces. Wear clothes suitable for art practice, students can bring their own protective apron if they have one. Basic materials such as brushes and paints, will be provided .

Students may wish to bring along a portrait or landscape photograph to transform in the painterly style of Henri Matisse.

  • What could it lead to?
