Enamelling is the process of fusing glass powders onto copper and silver. If you have experience, you will be encouraged to cut out your own shapes in both copper and silver to enamel.
This is a mixed ability class, but you must be able to focus, have high levels of concentration, good hand strength, dexterity, and good eyesight.
Advanced or experienced learners will be shown more technical skills to add to their skill set.
This course is specifically designed to enable you to:
Learn how to enamel onto copper and silver to make pendants, earrings, and rings.
Use glass media as decorative elements.
Learn to solder silver and copper together to make pieces of jewellery.
Use both opaque and transparent enamels.
Apply the skills to create your unique samples and make enamelled jewellery.
Develop a professional approach to all stages of the enamelling process.
It is essential that you are able to stand, have good eyesight, good concentration and manual dexterity in using the Kiln, workshop blow torches and other workshop equipment. You must also be able to understand verbal instructions and safely use the workshop equipment.
The tutor will perform practical demonstrations and give verbal instructions and feedback at various stages of the project. Learners will receive one-to-one support and participate in group discussion. Continuous guidance and help will be available to every learner.
You will need to buy some enamels and metals that you will use. Copper and silver is available to buy at the Institute, but a sample set of enamels will need to be purchased and will be discussed in the first class.
There are other jewellery courses at Redbridge Institute. Your tutor will give advice as to what is appropriate for you based on your needs and ability.
