This course is primarily for those who are complete beginners, but also suitable for those who have some experience and wish to develop skills and acquire new techniques.
You must have good hand strength, dexterity and good eyesight and have an interest and
enthusiasm for the subject.
This course will introduce you to the necessary skills and techniques needed for designing and making mosaics and small fused elements. By the end of the course you will have fabricated mosaics, incorporating fused glass of your own making, developed your own designs for mosaic and fusing, cut a variety of mosaic and fusing materials, lay a variety of opii (including opus vermiculatum and opus sectile), learnt the different effects possible from using glass frits and stringers and the principles of compatibility in relation to fusing, grouting and finishing.
Understanding and following health and safety guidelines and good practices are essential aspects of the course.
It is essential that you have good eyesight, good concentration and manual dexterity, also be able to understand verbal instructions and safely use the tools and materials.
You should NOT wear open shoes
Workshop clothes or apron should be worn.
A variety of teaching methods will be used, including lecture, demonstration and practical application, group and one-to-one tuition.
You will make samples and experiment with different materials and techniques. You will then apply these skills and techniques to the fabrication of mosaic panels. There will be continuous verbal feedback at all stages of the project as well as group discussion and support.
An initial assessment at the beginning of the course will establish your starting point, including skills level, related experience, confidence and preferred learning styles. It will also give your tutor an indication of your personal objectives.
Throughout the course your tutor will be observe and discuss with you your progress, making suggestions as to how to improve your skills and achieve your objectives. At the end of the course, you will assess and review of your overall progress in discussion with your tutor.
Approximately £15 materials cost - this will include a starter pack of fusing materials and a basic range of mosaic materials sufficient for our first small panel. A Very limited range of additional materials will be available for purchase. You will be advised where to purchase further materials. Learners will need to bring to class: a sketch book, pencils, workshop clothes or apron, and a small paint brush for glue.
You can continue to develop your skills and knowledge by attending the follow-on course at Mary Ward Centre or elsewhere.
