This is the entry point of the Pattern Cutting pathway. There is no assumed prior knowledge — the course begins with the fundamentals and builds methodically toward a complete, personal master block.
You will learn about:
— Core pattern cutting terminology: grainline, seam allowance, dart, notch, block, sloper
— Pattern cutting equipment: pattern master ruler, tracing wheel, awl, notcher, dot and cross paper
— Reading and interpreting a standard industry pattern block
— Practice exercises in ruler use, curve drafting and accurate measuring
— Taking a full, accurate set of personal body measurements
— Drafting the standard industry block, then systematically adjusting it to your own measurements
By the end of the course you will be able to: name and use core pattern cutting tools and terminology correctly, take accurate body measurements, and draft an industry-standard pattern block adjusted to your own proportions — the foundation for every course that follows.
Learning is supported through tutor demonstrations, verbal explanation and practical drafting work at the table. Students observe demonstrations before working independently with one-to-one guidance. Handouts and technical references support the learning process. Progress is monitored through tutorial feedback and self-assessment, with regular verbal feedback and encouragement throughout
Dot and cross paper will be provided for drafting. It is recommended that students obtain the following equipment:
— A3 arch lever folder with plastic pockets for storing handouts, pattern blocks and samples
— Notebook
— Pattern master ruler, tracing wheel, awl and notcher
— Tape measure, paper scissors, dressmaking pins
— Rubber, pencil (0.7mm HB or B), adhesive tape (Scotch translucent with dispenser)
— Coloured pencils or pens, calculator (phone is acceptable)
With a completed personal master block, students progress to Level 1: The Fitting Trial, where the block is tested in calico, fitted on the body, and refined through pattern adjustment
