This course continues from Level 0: The Master Block, where students drafted an industry-standard pattern block adjusted to their own measurements. In Level 1, that block is put to the test: you will construct a trial garment (toile) in calico and learn exactly how a flat pattern behaves on a real body.
You will learn about:— What calico fabric is and how it is used in garment development— Fabric grain, cross grain and selvedge— Correct placement of pattern pieces on fabric following grain lines— Preparing calico fabric for cutting, and tracing or pinning pattern pieces to fabric— Cutting pattern pieces accurately, pinning and assembling a trial garmentYou will also receive demonstrations on setting up the sewing machine and carrying out basic sewing tests for straight and curved seams, with the aim of constructing a complete trial. Once assembled, a fitting session will allow you to analyse the fit on the body. Through this process you will learn how to identify necessary adjustments and apply dart manipulation and fit corrections. These adjustments are then transferred back onto the paper pattern block by tracing and modifying it — and a second trial is made to test the improved fit.By the end of the course you will be able to: construct a calico trial from your pattern block, fit and diagnose the trial on the body, adjust the pattern block based on the fitting, and produce and assess a second, improved trial
Learning is supported through tutor demonstrations, verbal explanation and practical work. Students observe demonstrations before working independently with one-to-one guidance. Handouts and technical references support the process. Peer-centred learning is encouraged, and students often discuss and comment on each other's work. Progress is monitored through tutorial feedback and self-assessment, with regular verbal feedback and encouragement throughout.
Dot and cross paper will be provided. Students will need calico fabric for constructing trials, plus:— A3 arch lever folder, notebook, hand sewing needles and white thread— Fabric and paper scissors, dressmaking pins, pattern master ruler— Awl, notcher, tape measure, tracing wheel— Rubber, pencil (0.7mm HB or B), adhesive tape, coloured pencils, calculator
With a fitted, true-to-body pattern block in hand, students progress to Part 2: The Design Pattern, where an original design is developed from this base block and tested through further calico trials.
