Unlock the secrets of your own mind and sharpen your insight into others. Through hands-on experiments, self-assessments, and lively group challenges, you’ll discover how perception, emotion, and personality shape everyday interactions. No prior psychology experience needed—just bring your curiosity and a sense of fun!
The programme will encourage participant discussion, debate, and self-reflection, supporting individuals to use psychological perspectives/understanding to consider the self as: embodied; interpretive; reflexive; distributed; dynamic. The programme will draw together the different threads of psychology, across the 12-weeks, towards acknowledgement/understanding of human complexity and a developing sense of self within both the field of psychology and wider society.
The programme culminates in the development of a poster-presentation, both celebrating and knowledge-sharing identity, drawing on learning and understanding from the course.
This course is for anyone who is interested in psychology or human behaviour. It will be of particular interest to those who may wish to take their learning in this area further. Participants are not expected to have any prior knowledge of psychology.
If you are intrigued by what drives thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, or if you want to boost self-awareness, improve communication, and deepen relationships – this course is for you!
The course will cover topics such as:
Foundations of Mind & Behaviour (the history of psychology and research methods)
Perception & Attention (e.g; sensory biases, selective attention)
Emotions & Motivation (e,g; motional triggers, intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation)
Personality & Individual Differences (the ‘Big Five’, introversion/extraversion)
Social Interaction & Communication (e,g; attribution, nonverbal cues, active listening)
Growth & Applied Psychology (e,g; behaviour change, habit formation)
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
· Describe key psychological concepts of mind, behaviour, and emotion
· Recognise common perceptual and cognitive biases in yourself and others
· Apply personality frameworks to interpret individual differences
· Use active listening and nonverbal decoding to improve communication
· Develop a practical plan for personal growth using evidence-based techniques
Teaching will utilise the sharing of personal experiences and perspectives, supported by structured core-knowledge input. The use of slides and videos will support learning and encourage discussions and participation.
Teaching will draw upon the work of well-known psychologists, representing both a diversity of individuals and a diversity of the thought within the subject. This will allow for identification of the ‘voices’ - dominant, traditional and emergent - in psychology.
Students will be encouraged to keep their own learning journal (in whatever form suits them most – this can be pen & paper, an e-journal, voice-recordings, etc). There will be regular (fun!) quizzes during sessions. The final week will see students working in pairs to produce a poster presentation.
