  • Course Overview

"London has inspired artists throughout history, continue in this tradition with this course.

The course meets in a different venue each week, and a wide range of different places and subject matter are covered, from parks to galleries, views of London, museums churches and train stations. During winter months, we are indoors! And during the spring and summer we will always have somewhere beautiful and interesting to escape to if the weather changes.

This course is ideal for students who have had some experience drawing. Having previously done drawing for absolute beginners will put you in good stead for the course, each student will receive one-to-one tuition based upon there needs.

We will look at other artists work, often in person! Both at the sketch stage and the more finished work in order to deconstruct how it was made, what affect it has on us the viewer and what we can use for our own work.

For the final class we will be back in the studio at Mary Ward and will be working from our sketches in-order to learn how to combine and translate our observational work into something new in the studio.

Students will be strongly encouraged to develop work from their sketchbooks, and suggestions & advice about venues that offer good opportunities to draw will be made.

    "

  • What will it be like?

"Each session will be in a different location, with a different skill or approach the focus for the class as the subject demands.

Students will split up to draw and the tutor will give individual one on on guidance and feedback.

At the end of the class we will gather together for a show and tell to give constructive and friendly peer to peer feedback . In-order to develop students understanding, confidence and to learn from each other. Students will explain not just that they like something but why it is working in the drawing or painting.

    "

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

    "

To begin the course, you need to have an A3 sketchbook, a selection of pencils between 9H-9B. (You don't need the whole range). An eraser & pencil sharpener, A Biro pen and ruler. This will stand you in good stead to begin with.

Some classes will introduce drawing in colour! In which case some watercolour(paint or pencils) or brush pens , pastels will be excellent. The choice of exact medium is up to you but Students will be informed before hand for colour classes.

    "
