  • Course Overview

    This course is for adults who have completed an Excel beginners course (or have equivalent experience) and want to work faster and more confidently with everyday spreadsheets. Learners should already be able to enter and edit data, save and manage files, use basic formatting, and create simple calculations such as addition/subtraction and the SUM function.

    Building on these foundations, you will develop one level further by learning practical tools used in the workplace to organise data, improve accuracy, and present information clearly. Activities are based on realistic tasks such as budgets, staff lists, timesheets and simple tracking sheets.

    By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

    use key features of the Excel window to work efficiently such as ranges, fill handle, and quick formatting tools.

    improve data layout and consistency using formatting, number formats, and basic data validation techniques;

    copy, move and update data accurately using relative and absolute cell references;

    use common workplace functions beyond SUM, including AVERAGE, MIN, MAX, COUNT and simple IF statements;

    sort and filter lists correctly, and format data as an Excel Table to manage and summarise information;

    create and improve charts (titles, labels and choosing an appropriate chart type) and set up a spreadsheet for professional printing.

    Please ensure your English level is at E3/L1 English/ESOL to join.

  • What will it be like?

    This course is practical, supportive, and designed to build your confidence through hands-on learning. The tutor will use the smartboard to demonstrate Excel techniques step by step, and you will then practise on classroom PCs using clear written instructions and handouts.

    You will be encouraged to ask questions, take part in discussion, collaborate with others and work in groups on practical workplace tasks. Your tutor will also give you individual feedback, so you understand how to improve and what to do next to make progress.

    The tutor will also give guidance on how to access useful online Excel tutorials for extra practice outside lessons. To get the most out of the course, learners are encouraged to practise and complete homework outside the classroom.

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

    You will use the computers provided in the classroom. Please bring a notepad, a pen, and a folder so you can keep your handouts safe and organised.

    The tutor will guide you on how to create or access a Microsoft 365 account so you can use the free online version of Excel for practice outside the classroom.

    You do not need to have your own computer at home. You can practise using the free computers at the Centre, or you can use computers at your local library in London.

  • What could it lead to?

    Your tutor will give you guidance on the best next step for you.

    Depending on your interests and confidence, you may explore Word and PowerPoint for Work, or other digital skills courses. Your tutor can also share information about relevant courses currently available this term or in future terms, so you can choose what you may like to study next.
