This French Beginners course is designed for learners with little or no previous knowledge of the French language. It provides a friendly and supportive introduction to French, helping students develop basic skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. The course focuses on building confidence from the very first lesson, using practical activities, short dialogues and everyday situations to make learning meaningful and enjoyable.
The course is suitable for complete beginners, learners returning to French after a long break, travellers preparing for a visit to a French‑speaking country, and anyone with an interest in French language and culture. No prior study of French is required, and learners are guided step by step at a comfortable pace.
What You’ll Learn
• Core vocabulary for daily life: greetings, numbers, food, travel, family, and more
• Basic grammar structures, including present‑tense verbs and sentence building
• Pronunciation techniques to help you speak clearly and naturally
• How to hold simple conversations and understand common expressions
• Reading and listening strategies for beginner‑level texts and audio
• Insights into French culture, customs, and everyday life
Lessons are interactive and learner‑centred, with an emphasis on communication rather than memorisation. Students take part in guided speaking practice, role‑plays and short listening and reading activities, allowing them to use French actively in a supportive environment. Speaking practice is encouraged from the start, and regular feedback helps learners build confidence as the course progresses. The content is carefully structured to ensure a gradual progression and to prepare learners for further study at the next level.
Students are asked to bring Grammaire progressive du français – Débutant to support their learning during and between lessons. To get the most from the course, learners are encouraged to attend regularly and participate actively.
This course runs throughout the year in three stages: 1A in Term 1, 1B in Term 2, and 1C in Term 3.
