  • Course Overview

Build your skills and learn new techniques in stained glass and painted glass. Develop your own ideas, designs and projects. Painted glass will be kiln-fired.

The course is for students who have no previous knowledge or experience of kiln fired glass painting or glass working skills. Although it is not necessary, good practical skills would be an advantage. Experienced students are also welcome if they have a particular project or technique/approach they would like to explore or develop further.

The course will cover a range of stained glass techniques with a particular emphasis on kiln-fired glass painting and surface treatments. Students will learn to design and make a simple stained glass panel of approximately A4 size incorporating all or some of the following processes:

    - Health & Safety procedures related to working in glass and lead

    - Design development and cartooning

    - Glass cutting machine rolled and mouth blown glass

    - Mixing and application of Kiln-fired glass paint, enamels and silver stain

    - Basic fusing techniques

    - Leading, copper foiling techniques

Students will also learn about historical and contemporary stained glass

Design a simple stained glass panel

Cut sheet glass safely and accurately

Mix and apply glass paint, enamels and silver stain using a range of brushes to achieve basic line and shading techniques

Prepare resists and sandblast glass to achieve various surface effects

Use fusing glass to explore basic fusing techniques that can be combined with glass painting

Assemble a glass panel safely and accurately using leading or copper foiling techniques

Identify examples of historical and contemporary stained glass from a diverse range of cultures

  • What will it be like?

Students will learn through a combination of one to one support and group activities. This will include practical demonstrations, group discussions, illustrated lectures, handouts, reference to books, postcards and websites.

Students will be assessed on a one to one and group basis. Assessment takes place through observation of practical work and individual and group discussion during and on completion of work. Students will be encouraged to keep a record of their progress through notes and photos and contribute to a supportive and friendly learning environment by taking part in feedback sessions with the rest of the group.

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

All tools are provided. Some basic materials are available in the workshop including a range of glass paints and some can be purchased- such as solder -please discuss with tutor. Students will need to buy their own glass and lead for their projects and some glass paints .Suppliers details will be provided during the first session. Cost can range from about £15-£40 but can depend mainly on the type of glass. Glass paints range from about £3.00-£10.00 each for basic colours in small quantities.

Students will be encouraged to do their own research. This can take the form of developing a sketchbook, taking photos, collecting images, Internet research and visiting museums, galleries and buildings where examples of stained glass can be seen.

  • What could it lead to?

Students can continue on the same or similar course the following term and attempt more ambitious designs and techniques. There are some further and higher education colleges that offer general glass making courses. Students can set up a self employed business or work in an established studio or go into restoration or undertake repair work.
