  • Course Overview

This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in modern and contemporary Britain, postcolonialism, or histories of race/ antiracism.

The course covers works produced in the twentieth century, with particular focus on the period 1948-1979. We will look at postcolonial British literature (as well as some from former colonies) and nonfiction scholarly sources. The course is accessible – you don’t need to have read anything like this before! By the end of the course students will feel more confident in critical reading and discussion of complex and difficult themes. Students will develop reading and speaking skills at the level of a first-year undergraduate university course, and know more about postcolonial British history and literature.

  • What will it be like?

The course will be discussion based. In each class we will discuss a key theme, sharing our pre-existing knowledge and ideas. We’ll then refer to a couple of extracts from important key texts, breaking these down into easily-digestible concepts and ideas. We’ll then have further discussion and/ or work on some creative activities and outputs based on the materials we’ve looked at. Progress is measured based on each student’s personal aims and goals (there are no ‘assessments’ though the tutor will give you feedback on your ideas and written work).

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

No extra materials needed. Homework might include bringing things you’ve seen, heard or read to class to discuss.

  • What could it lead to?

After completing the course you may wish to enroll in further studies of postcolonial Britain including in Literature, History, Sociology or related disciplines.
