  • Course Overview

Sashiko which translates as - little stabs is a traditional Japanese hand quilting technique used to mend and strengthen worn out garments. Historically, the geometric patterns are formed using running stitches in white thread on indigo dyed fabric, although the technique can be adapted and worked in any colour combination.

    The workshop will cover: -

    Marking out a simple pattern.

The sashiko technique and stitching a simple geometric design.

A brief look at the history of sashiko and the Japanese art of repair.

Experimentation is encouraged. During the class you can either use sashiko to repair a small to medium sized hole, reinforce an area of a garment likely to wear, such as knees and elbows, or create a decorative piece exploring the beauty of the technique.

The workshop is suitable for all abilities. The session is aimed at anyone with an interest in textiles wishing to learn basic repair for both practical and artistic purposes.

  • What will it be like?

We will begin by drafting out a simple pattern and then stitch the design using the sashiko method. There will be demonstrations of techniques, plus a PowerPoint presentation to inspire further exploration.

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

Basic materials and equipment can be provided.

Something to repair or fabric to work on, sashiko work best on firmly woven medium weight fabrics, therefore it is ideal for repairing denim garments such as trousers or jackets. The technique is traditionally worked on hand dyed and indigo fabrics – if you have any, these would be ideal!

Fabric for patching, to match item you are repairing or in a contrasting colour. Subtle patterns could be used, although plain fabric works best to show off the patterns.

Needles, sashiko needles if you have them or crewel needles – but something long and sturdy to pass through the fabric.

Strong thread, ideally sashiko threads or strong embroidery threads in a pale or contrasting colour to your chosen fabric.

Scissors, for both fabric and threads.

    Pencil and ruler.

    Pins and a pin cushion.

Thimble, advisable as the fabric can be quite tough to work.

    Needle threader (optional).
