This course is for beginners and people with some experience of watercolour already; covering expressive, environmentally engaged watercolour inspired by painter Kurt Jackson, whose landscapes and Seascapes merge close observation of nature with ecological concern. You will explore how to translate the energy of coastlines, rivers, and fields into dynamic, layered paintings rather than literal views, using techniques for capturing waves, spray and pebbles on the shore.
The session includes demonstrations of how to paint seascapes using resists such as salt and wax; building a painting with transparent layers of colour, and experimenting with adding collaged written notes into some paintings.
Guided exercises will be given to develop atmospheric washes with limited palettes, and the integration of handwritten notes that echo Jackson’s sketchbooks.
By the end, you will produce a resolved painting and exploratory studies that combine drawing from photos and copies of paintings, expressive watercolour handling, and a more reflective connection to the environment.
The course will take place in a classroom and there will be some basic materials provided.
