This course is for beginners and people with some experience of watercolour already; inspired by Raoul Dufy focusing on his lively use of colour, rhythmic line, and joyful depiction of everyday life you will experiment with transparent washes of colour over light drawing and add some line in coloured inks.
We will look at the Fauvist influence on Dufy’s style and how he paints favourite themes such as regattas, racecourses and orchestras. You will complete rapid line sketches from reference, focusing on gesture and simplified shapes. Tutor demonstrations will shows how to float transparent blues, yellows and reds across the drawing, to create light and movement.
Throughout the day you will create some studies in the style of Dufy and then a final composition characteristic of Dufy’s seaside and urban scenes considering movement, colour rhythm and atmosphere
The course will take place in a classroom and there will be some basic materials provided.
Teaching methods: Visual demonstration and verbal explanation.. One-to-one teaching. Group discussions;
Images of paintings will be provided.
How students are assessed: Questions and answers during group discussions and one-to-one teaching.
Record of students' progress and achievement on an assessment sheet as they achieve the course objectives. Practical work produced is evidence of learning.
Group tuition and individual tuition will be given. There will be practical demonstrations and students will be doing practical art work. At the end there will be a time of looking and evaluating your artwork as a group with constructive feedback.
You will need to bring 300gram cold pressed watercolour paper; A3 size is best; Watercolour brushes and paints. The tutor will email you a list of materials and suppliers.
You can attend more art courses at Mary Ward Centre and other colleges; There is an accredited programme of art Pre-foundation and Foundation Access to HE at Mary Ward Centre. You can also incorporate watercolour practice into further desired art activity and projects
