Who is this course for?
This course is for anyone wanting to learn basic drawing skills in a friendly and accessible atmosphere. Even if you haven't done any drawing since you were at school, we will help you to improve and gain confidence. Beginners very welcome! No previous knowledge or experience necessary.
What does this course cover?
The course will include mark making and composition. Beginners will learn to draw using basic shapes to create complex drawings. Students will also learn use of line, tone, examining the use of space and light, shading and composition.
There will be an opportunity to pursue your own subject interests in drawing and you are encouraged to bring resource materials for your own use.
By the end of the course you should be able to:
Create a reasonable likeness of your subject. Understand proportion, shading, perspective, positive and negative spaces.
The class will take place in a regular class room, but it can be equipped with desk easels and anything you need to start drawing. There will be group and one-to-one tuition. The tutor will introduce the subject of the lesson with a video and/or demonstration and a PowerPoint presentation followed by individual guidance and support, taking health security measures into account. There will be written, illustrated handouts for each student which will help you throughout the lesson and when working at home. There will be a 'gallery' at the end of the day where each student can show their work for feedback in the form of constructive criticism from the tutor and other students. You are encouraged to ask questions so don't be shy!
We hope to have at least one outing to a museum or gallery to draw.

How students are assessed: Questions and answers during group discussions and one-to-one teaching.
Record of students' progress and achievement on an assessment sheet as they achieve the course objectives. Practical work produced is evidence of learning.
What ese do you need to do or buy?
The college will provide basic media and equipment, but you will need to start to buy your own kit if you want to practice at home. Graphite pencils grades 2B-6B, an eraser, a pencil sharpener, a ruler, an A4 drawing pad with detachable pages, and masking tape will help you get started. You do not have to spend a lot of money, especially if you are not sure if you are going to carry on to a further course, but, generally speaking, if you buy from a good art shop the quality will be better.
Join other Art classes at Mary Ward Centre. There is an accredited programme of art Pre-foundation and Foundation Access to HE at Mary Ward Centre. Incorporate drawing practice into further desired art activity and projects. For example, build sketchbooks into a visual life-diary!
